I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you
to Irving Elementary School. We are proud to provide
a quality learning environment that is “A Great
Place for Kids.” Irving Elementary also has a
wonderful caring staff that has tremendous parent
support. Irving offers Kindergarten through fifth
grade classes.
Our curriculum provides a superb educational program
for the students. They receive instruction in
reading, language arts, math, science, and social
studies. The students also participate in art,
music, physical education, media and guidance
classes. In fifth grade the students may elect to be
in chorus, band, and/or orchestra. We provide
special educational services, speech services and a
Talented and Gifted program for those who qualify.
We have an elementary counselor that has weekly
classroom guidance and also works with small groups
and individual students. We have a school nurse or
health associate in the building each day.
Irving is housed in a two-story building that was
built in the 1950’s. It was named after the American
author Washington Irving. A three-level wing was
added on in 1980. It currently houses Kindergarten
through fifth grade as well as the Indianola Head
Start Preschool Program. It contains 38 classrooms,
with a separate gym, lunchroom, and media center.
The building has an elevator, which makes it
handicap accessible. The Irving campus is centrally
located within the community next door to Simpson
College.
Irving Elementary runs on an alternative calendar,
also called Year Round Education. Classes start in
mid-July and end with the rest of the students in
Indianola who are on the traditional calendar. The
students have classes for nine weeks and then have a
three-week break. The students at Irving have the
option of taking classes for an additional 20 days
during the breaks. These breaks are called
intersessions. They may attend morning only,
afternoon only, all day, or not at all. They also
may attend for one or both weeks during these times.
Everyone in the program has two common weeks of
vacation. Breaks are scheduled to coincide with the
traditional calendar whenever possible.
Irving has a friendly atmosphere which is conducive
to learning. The parents are supportive and the
Parent Teacher Organization is actively involved in
the life of the school providing financial support
and the planning of social days and fun activities
to complement our program. Good parent-teacher
communication permeates throughout the building.
Irving has a strong group of volunteers. If you
would like to volunteer at our school please call
961-9560 and we will get you involved. If you would
like more information about our school please feel
free to call. You are welcome to visit Irving
Elementary and find out in person about the
educational opportunities that are being provided
for the students.
