Special announcement regarding ICSD and Iowa School Alerts for the 2015-16 school year
Beginning the 2015-16 school year, Indianola Schools will no longer utilize Iowa School Alerts for emergency notifications. Indianola Schools is partnering with Warren County to implement a new emergency notification system, called WENS, which will make use of parent contact data in Infinite Campus. Early dismissals, late starts, and cancellations due to inclement weather are all types of messages that will be delivered through the WENS system. In order to continue to receive these types of alerts, all parents must have correct contact information listed in Infinite Campus. To verify contact information is correct, parents must have access to an Infinite Campus Parent Portal account. The Parent Portal is a communication gateway between the district and parents using our student information system, Infinite Campus. Having a Parent Portal account allows parents to provide the district with up-to-date contact information, which, in turn, helps district employees provide timely communication to parents.
If you already have an Infinite Campus Parent Portal account, please log in as soon as possible and verify your contact information. If you do not have a Parent Portal account, please go to either of these URL’s to request an activation key to set up an account - http://tinyurl.com/ICSDParentPortalRequest OR http://goo.gl/peOqJV. Once the web form is submitted, we must verify your child’s data before we can create your user account. Please allow at least one week for us to process your account. If you have difficulty requesting an account, please contact Julie Ormsby at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The superintendent, in consultation with the transportation director, will make school delay, early release, or cancelation decisions in the event of inclement weather. Weather forecasts and hour-by-hour weather conditions will be tracked through NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and other resources. The transportation director and superintendent will be checking roads, speaking with the country road supervisor, and communicating with area transportation directors and superintendents prior to 5:30 A.M. with the goal of making a decision by that time. In some instances a decision may be made on the previous evening to delay or cancel school the next day. If there is a late start due to weather, there will be no morning ECSE or Preschool. As soon as a decision to delay school, cancel school, or release school early is made, communication will be made in the following ways:
Television: WOI-ABC Channel 5, KCCI TV Channel 8, WHO TV Channel 13
Radio: 1040 WHO AM, KISS 107.5 FM, The Bus 100.3 FM, Capitol 106.3 FM, 1460 KXNO AM, Star 102.5 FM, KIOA 93.3 FM, Lazer 103.3 FM, Lite 104.1 FM, 1350 KRNT AM, Praise 940 AM
Online: www.indianola.k12.ia.us, WHOtv.com, 13NOW.com
We also plan to have emergency notification by phone for those who are signed up. More information about WENS (wireless emergency notification system) will be forthcoming.
Please understand that being able to safely transport students to and from school is the primary determiner. Local weather conditions can vary between cities and even within different parts of the school district. Inclement weather decisions can be difficult to make, and weather conditions do sometimes change after a call has been made. Hours of school missed due to inclement weather will have to be made up, so students, parents, and staff should anticipate snow days being added to the end of the school year.
